Latest company news about From VR/MR to AR, there are unlimited opportunities for the near eye display industry in 2025

2024 is a new stage of development for the near eye display industry. In the field of augmented reality (AR), key hardware has achieved iterative upgrades driven by the trend of artificial intelligence (AI) development. At the same time, the market landscape of the entire supply chain has also undergone corresponding changes.

At the 2025 TrendForce Jibang Consulting New Display Industry Seminar, Jibang Consulting analyst Wan Wen reviewed the current situation and trends of the near eye display industry in 2024, and conducted in-depth analysis from the two dimensions of technology and market, clearly demonstrating the current situation and future direction of the near eye display industry for many industry professionals.

Four key modules form the cornerstone of the near eye display industry

Visual information accounts for over 70% of the five senses that humans use to receive information. With the continuous development of display technology and devices, people's demand for displays is gradually evolving towards augmented reality. But for now, the immersive experience of brain computer interfaces or stream of consciousness still retains more sci-fi colors, and the implementation of such experiences still needs to rely on near eye display devices as carriers.

VR/MR in near eye display devices is based on video perspective (VST) technology. The device captures real information through cameras and sensors, integrates it with virtual content, and projects it to the human eye to create an immersive experience. In contrast, AR devices need to perceive the real environment and typically use optical components such as waveguides to transmit ambient light and reflect display content, achieving virtual real fusion.

Close eye display devices have four key hardware modules, namely optics, display, chip and sensor, and battery, which together support the development of terminal devices.

From the perspective of the industrial chain, there are numerous manufacturers in the fields of VR and MR for optical modules. In the field of AR, the Birthborn solution has a high market share due to its simple optical structure, low cost, mature technology, good imaging effect, and suitability for rapid landing of consumer products. However, optical waveguides still have good development potential due to their characteristics of lightweight, high transmittance, and strong wearability. At present, optical waveguide solutions are showing a diversified development trend.

In terms of display modules, both Chinese and international manufacturers have shown strong growth momentum in recent years. At the same time, university industry research platforms have actively participated, jointly promoting the rapid development of display technology. The OLEDoS field has attracted the attention of many manufacturers. In addition to Japanese manufacturer Sony and Chinese companies BOE (BOE), Shiya Technology, and Xitai Technology, more than ten Chinese manufacturers have begun to lay out 12 inch mass production lines.

In the field of chips and sensor modules, Qualcomm still holds a dominant position in the system on chip (SOC) field. However, Chinese manufacturers are actively seeking breakthroughs, and some brand manufacturers are attempting to improve the overall performance control of their products through independent research and development of chips or supply chain integration, in order to better enhance the user experience.

The battery module involves battery cells, battery packaging, and power systems. At present, the main direction of efforts in the industry is how to further optimize the heat dissipation, safety, and weight of batteries while increasing battery energy density and improving endurance.
