In May of this year, Google showcased a multimodal AI project called Project Astra during its I/O conference, which can recognize various content information such as audio, video, and text, and has certain storage capabilities. During the demonstration, Google demonstrated the performance of Project Astra on an AR glasses prototype
Recently, Google Deepmind website opened a testing channel for Project Astra, and Google will release this prototype glasses equipped with AI and AR functions to a few selected users for more usage testing.
It is reported that this AR glasses prototype is equipped with the Android XR operating system, which is a new platform created by Google for visual computing, aimed at supporting the development of devices such as glasses and headphones. The functions of the new glasses include real-time translation, memory location, and reading text without the need for a mobile phone.
In terms of display system, it is reported that the AR prototype glasses are equipped with Micro LED microdisplays provided by Raxium.
According to data, Raxium was founded in 2017 and focuses on developing single-chip integrated RGB Micro LED displays suitable for AR/VR and other smart devices. In 2022, Google announced the acquisition of Raxium for a reported amount of $1 billion.
Google has stated that it currently has no plans to launch this AR glasses prototype product to consumers. But Google is looking ahead to the future form of its AR glasses, hoping to provide a variety of stylish and comfortable AR glasses for consumers to choose from, and seamlessly integrate with other Android devices. AR glasses equipped with the Android XR system can unleash Gemini's powerful features with just a gentle press, providing navigation, translation, or message summarization without the need for a mobile phone.
